STYLE GUIDE
Sustainable fashion starts in the closet you already own
Sustainable fashion gets framed as a shopping decision — which brand, which fabric, which certification. But the garment with the smallest footprint is the one already hanging in your closet, and the habits that matter most cost nothing: wear things more, keep them alive longer, and let them exit well.
The metric is wears, not labels
A conscientiously made organic-cotton shirt worn three times is worse for the planet than a fast-fashion top worn eighty. Production dominates a garment's footprint, so every additional wear divides that fixed cost — the same arithmetic as cost per wear, with carbon in place of currency. The most sustainable act available to you tonight is not a purchase: it's putting the unworn half of your closet back into rotation.
Buy rarely, buy for thirty wears
The 30-wears test is the honest gatekeeper: before buying, count the real occasions this piece will see in its life with you. Not "could I wear it thirty times" — will I. The test passes boring staples easily and trend pieces almost never, which is exactly the point. And secondhand passes automatically: a garment already made carries no new production cost, only the wears you add to it.
Care is the multiplier
·
Wash less. Most garments are washed out of habit, not need — and washing is how clothes age. Air a worn piece overnight before deciding it's dirty.
·
Wash cold, dry on air. Heat is the enemy in both machines: cold cycles protect fibre and colour, and the dryer shortens a garment's life faster than wearing it does.
·
Repair the small things early. A loose button is a two-minute job; the same button lost is how a shirt stops being worn. Cobblers and tailors resurrect pieces for a fraction of replacement.
Exit well
The donation bin is where the guilt goes, not always where the clothes go — a large share of donations are landfilled or shipped abroad into markets that can't absorb them. Better exits, in order: sell or give directly to a person who wants the piece (resale platforms make this straightforward), donate only clean items with real life left, and route true end-of-life textiles to fabric recycling rather than the bin. A garment that leaves your closet into someone's rotation is a success; one that leaves it for a landfill via a feel-good middleman is not.
